The Clerk of the County Assembly, Mr. Salim Juma, today led a team from the Assembly in receiving the Assessment Report on Petition Management from Human Rights Agenda (HURIA).
Presenting the report, HURIA Executive Director Mr. Yusuf Lule said the assessment sought to provide a broader picture of the complaints architecture in the Coast region and how it contributes to peace and good governance.
According to the report, the period between 2013 and 2026, Taita Taveta County recorded the highest number of petitions at 160, followed by Mombasa with 39, Tana River with 32, Kilifi with 15, Kwale with 6, and Lamu with 1.
The report further identifies Land Governance and Natural Resources, Environment, Water and Climate Change, Security, Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion, and Education, Youth and Social Services as the key thematic issues raised by citizens through petitions.
Mr. Lule noted that through effective policy generation, critical complaints-handling institutions such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the National Land Commission (NLC) have been established, playing a vital role in addressing public grievances and maintaining peace across the country.
In his remarks, Clerk Juma called for closer collaboration between the two institutions. "We must work closely together to interrogate where the problems lie in the management of petitions, come up with practical and lasting solutions, and endeavour to have the Mombasa County Assembly at the forefront in responsive and effective petition management" , he said.
Following deliberations, both parties agreed to develop clear timelines and reconvene in a fortnight to chart a concrete way forward on strengthening petition management.
