County Assembly Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Governance has set the tone for the new financial year, outlining priorities aimed at easing congestion, strengthening road safety and ensuring that investment translates into tangible benefits for residents.

Meeting at the Assembly precincts, the Committee zeroed in on the cycling lane along Nyali Links Road, which has drawn complaints over worsening traffic jams. Members resolved to engage the Department of Transport and Infrastructure to strike a balance between easing congestion and safeguarding cyclists and pedestrians.

“We must ensure that every transport decision enhances safety without compromising efficiency,” a committee member noted during deliberations. The session also reviewed the County Road Safety Policy, with members stressing the need for departmental programmes to align with Ward Development Plans. Clear budget updates, they said, would be critical in strengthening oversight and tracking performance.

On the investment front, the Committee acknowledged rising investor interest in Mombasa and proposed structured talks with the Mombasa Investment Corporation. The goal is to guarantee that new investments generate jobs, support local enterprises and promote inclusive development.

Hon. Prischillah Mumba called for a consultative meeting with the Kenya Ports Authority and other stakeholders, saying stronger community initiatives could deepen ties between the Port and the people of Mombasa.

The Committee pledged proactive oversight, vowing to ensure that transport and investment decisions deliver safe, efficient and measurable benefits for the people of Mombasa.
